Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News is one of the nation’s most respected basketball writers. He’s written books with thingy Vitale and Rick Pitino, travels the country seeing games each year and knows every top coach.

Weiss has been impressed by what he’s seen and heard since Billy Gillispie took over as Kentucky’s coach. He recently watched Gillispie come to a small AAU tournament at Ryder College to personally watch Mason County star Darius Miller play while Louisville coach sent his son, assistant coach Richard Pitino, to watch Miller. “I was really impressed by that. The head coach was there and he is making an effort to be very visible with prospects. I think that is going to lead to huge dividends,” Weiss said.

Weiss seems the same “relentless recruiting approach” from Gillispie that Pitino first had when he came to Kentucky and made UK an annual Final Four contender. “He is not afraid to recruit the great player,” Gillispie said. “I think Billy understands the big picture. Right now he is a little bit Texas-centric, but Texas is producing a lot of good players right now. That is not so bad now.”

However, Weiss says there’s no way Gillispie can fully appreciate what lies ahead until he goes through a season as UK’s basketball coach. “I don’t think anybody knows what is at Kentucky until you coach there. It is the biggest fishbowl in college basketball. They have the most passionate fans of anyone I have ever been around in basketball. I have been to Duke, North Carolina. No one is more passionate about basketball than Kentucky fans.

“When they lose, a dark cloud goes over the state until they play again. When they win, everybody is happy. People can go to work and brag about Kentucky. It is a phenomena you cannot duplicate anywhere else. When you go there for a big game, it is one of the few places I can feel the electricity because it is so important to the people in the stands. No way Billy can understand that until he goes through it.”
