Reporting Day Tidbits

The Kentucky Wildcats reported for fall practice today for the first time under Head Coach Joker Phillips. KSR brings you a few notes from reporting day for the Kentucky Wildcats.

One of the most talked about days of the football season is reporting day. It’s a day that answers a few questions that are brought about during the summer months. “What does player X look like? Did player Z make the grades? Does player A look healthy after his injury?”

It’s all about the looks, but the real questions are answered when the pads begin to clash. Until then, we have to settle for the basics.

As expected, Donte Rumph finally made it to the UK campus. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound tackle looked to be in pretty good shape for a young man who hasn’t played organized football in the last year, plus. Rumph should provide depth on the defensive line early in the season and could see his role grow as the season progresses.

Another defensive lineman who reported was redshirt freshman Mister Cobble. Cobble has had academic difficulties this summer and could still be ineligible. But the biggest news is that he’s still there. That means he likely plans to stick it out and get eligible for next season if he’s not ready to go this year.

Jake Lanefski is back and healthy. One of Kentucky’s more aggressive linemen, Lanefski will fight for playing time at center and possibly at guard. Even though he tore his ACL last year, he was rumored to have come into camp in phenomenal shape. Te 6-foot-3, 290-pounder will be a contributor on the line, adding another mean streak to the group.

Ricky Lumpkin, who has struggled with his weight sometimes being too much and other times being too light was said to be around 300-pounds when he reported today. At 6-foot-4, carrying his 300-pounds will make his ability to push around interior linemen a lot easier task. Lumpkin’s a senior this year, so this is his time to shine and show the potential that is within.

Junior receiver Randall Cobb told the media today that he thought that UK’s pace would be even more uptempo this fall than it was this spring. It was noticeably more uptempo than in previous years. “Everybody’s ready to get into football now. We’re tired of the running and lifting. We want to do football things. I think there’s going to be a lot of aggression out on the field,” said Cobb.

Locke still claims to be the speed champion of the team. Locke has previously been clocked under 4.3 in the forty, but Jerrell Priester the freshman athlete from South Carolina challenged Derrick. “(Priester’s) for real; his speed is for real,” said Locke. “He can run. I’m still the top dog. But that guy, he can fly. If he can get the ball and go around the corner, they better watch out,” said Locke.

Wildcats going black? Annually there’s a question about new uniforms. The sub-question is will the Cats wear black? “We’re still pushing the black. We want the black bad. I think that’s something we can get in the future,” said Cobb. “Joker understands that we feel different when we wear it. I think he’ll be a little more open to that stuff,” Cobb finished.

Mike Summers has made an impression on his new team already, receiving great accolades from Derrick Locke. “We got a new o-line coach. He’s the real deal. I love the way he communicate with his guys and I love the way he communicates with me,” said Locke. “He makes sure everything is going the way it’s supposed to be going,” Locke said.
