North Cobb (Ga.) athlete, Darren Waller has recently seen his stock rise tremendously on the recruiting trail. What is it about Waller that college coaches are so excited about?
Standing at 6-foot-5, 208-pounds, Darren Waller is an imposing presence on the football field at the high school level. But that’s not the only impressive attribute that Waller has. “Obviously he’s got speed,” said Shane Queen, Head Coach at North Cobb. “He ran a 4.36 (forty) that was electronically timed. He covers a lot of ground. He fills the alley. He’s got a great GPA and he’s a great leader with great skills,” finished Queen.
It’s clear that Waller is an elite level athlete. But the question is where does he play at the next level? “Some people are recruiting him as an outside linebacker. Some are recruiting him as a safety. Some like him as wide receiver. He’s very fluid for a kid his size,” said Queen. “He’s pretty well rounded for a high school player. I’ve never had a kid run a 4.36 forty,” Queen stated.
As a junior, statistically Waller had a great year, racking up 120 tackles in ten games. But Queen said much of that was due to problems on defense. “That’s too much for our free-safety. He made a lot of touchdown saving tackles and that’s not what we want. We’ll play differently this year so he can fill the alley more,” said Queen.
Waller’s hearing from several schools, including Kentucky. “This is the busiest I’ve been in years. We’ve got three or four D-1 kids. Kentucky’s doing a good job recruiting him. All the Big Ten, SEC and ACC schools are involved,” said Queen.
Waller’s known offers are Kentucky, Illinois, and Air Force.
Waller has visited a few schools this year, including Kentucky’s Junior Day, Georgia Tech and Troy. But there’s a special connection that Waller has with Kentucky.
“Tee Martin actually coached here a few years ago. We’ve got a player up (at UK), Matt Roark. (Waller is very interested in those guys,” said Queen. “His recruiting process has really just taken off and blew up. He wants to get a quality education. I could see him making an early commitment just to get things over with before the start of his senior year,” Queen finished.
