Former Auburn All-American football player Gregg Carr will receive an honor from the NCAA.

Auburn, Ala.--Former Auburn football star Dr. Gregg Carr will be honored as a winner of the 2010 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for his professional and civic contributions after college.

The NCAA annually honors six outstanding athletes 25 years after they completed their college careers. Carr will be honored on Jan. 15th at the NCAA Convention in Atlanta along with Doug Flutie, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Jack Del Rio, Maureen O’Toole-Purcell and Deb Richard.

Carr, an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, was an All-American on the field at Auburn and a four-year letterman from 1981-84. As a civil engineering major, he was an academic All-American who was named as one of the nation’s top five student-athletes by the National Football Foundation.

Gregg Carr was a key player for Auburn's 1983 SEC Championship team.

A three-time All-SEC linebacker, he was a four-time All-SEC Academic Team selection. Carr was named the the SEC’s Most Valuable Lineman in 1984 and was a nominee for the Lombardi Award. He made 289 tackles in four seasons for the Tigers.

He played four years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers before making the decision to enter medical school at UAB and retire from football. He graduated from medical school in 1994 and is an orthopedic surgeon at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.
