ATHENS – For Georgia's 23 seniors, losing to Kentucky in their last game in Sanford Stadium was not…
UK 34 UGA 27
Georgia was led 20-6 following the first half of play, and it looked as if they were going to cruise to victory.
Kentucky had other plans.
The Wildcats came storming out of the gate to begin the second half, with Moncell Allen forcing a fumble on the kickoff, that was recovered by Matt Roark at the Georgia 14. Two runs of two and twelve yards by Randall Cobb resulted in a Wildcat touchdown. A single score separated the teams.
Georgia would later score a TD to regain the margin, giving them a 27-13 lead. The Dawgs would not score again.
The Wildcats then reeled off three unanswered TDs to take the lead.
Midway through the third quarter Morgan Newton hooked up with La'Rod King through the air for the second TD of the quarter. A Lones Seiber PAT pulled the Cats to within seven, 27-20.
Early in the fourth quarter Derrick Locke to a screen pass from Newton to the house from 60 yards out. The PAT pulled the Cats even at 27.
With less than five minutes gone in the fourth stanza Shane McCord picked off a Joe Cox pass at the Georgia 23 and rumbled 15 yards to the 8. The rushes by Randall Cobb and a PAT gave the Wildcats the lead 34-27.
The win in Athens was the first for the Wildcats since 1977, and broke a string of 16 losses between the hedges.
The win assures Kentucky of a winning regular season, increasing their record to 7-4. They wrap up the regular season at Commonwealth Stadium next Saturday against the 6-5 Tennessee Volunteers.
