Kentucky fell to the Mississippi State Bulldogs tonight by a score of 31-21. The Wildcats were led by running back Derrick Locke with 103 yards on 17 carries, but it wasn't enough as MSU's ground game was virtually unstoppable.

Anthony Dixon rushed for a Mississippi State record, 252 yards on 33 carries and scored twice in the victory over Kentucky. Kentucky's defense had no answer for Dan Mullen's game plan to play three receivers virtually all game.

Kentucky remained in the nickel package and the Bulldogs took full advantage. Mississippi State as a team rushed for 348 yards and outgained the Cats overall, 393 to 308.

Kentucky's young quarterback, Morgan Newton played the entire game, throwing 18 times with 11 completions and 145 yards. Newton also ran for one touchdown.

Kentucky's star, Randall Cobb gained only 49 yards receiving and rushing. He did manage a touchdown run in the third quarter, but was never a factor in the game.

Kentucky had a chance to tie the game late as Newton had the Wildcats driving down the field, even converting three third downs on the possession. But the final play of the night for Kentucky's offense came when Newton, on 4th and five, wasn't able to get rid of the ball tried to run for the conversion. He was tackled and that ended all hope for a tie.

Kentucky is back in action next week when in-state opponent Eastern Kentucky comes to town.
