Boyd prepares for another shot at NFL: Pt 1

“I love being with kids. I love teaching team and watching them learn. Anytime I have a chance to give back by helping kids, I’m going to do it,” said Boyd.

HARRODSBURG -- He’s been working out in Minnesota with the NFL’s premier receiver, Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald, to make sure he’s ready for another chapter in his professional football life.

However, on Monday night former University of Kentucky quarterback Shane Boyd was here working the Craig Yeast Football Skills Camp -- and loving every minute of it.

“I love being with kids. I love teaching team and watching them learn. Anytime I have a chance to give back by helping kids, I’m going to do it,” said Boyd.

Yet he’s hoping to get his pro career heading back in a more positive direction soon. He was signed as a free agent by Tennessee in 2005, cut and then signed with Pittsburgh. The Steelers sent him to NFL Europe for a season before he was cut and spent the rest of the year on Arizona’s practice team. Next came a stop with the Houston Texans before he was eventually released.

Earlier this year he signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League but was released in training camp. A few weeks later he was picked by San Francisco in the initial draft for the new United Football League (UFL).

If Boyd has been discouraged, he hides it well. “I don’t lose hope because to get to where I am at now, I have already knocked the door open,” Boyd said. “I am just going to continue to see what God has planned for me. People have been telling me since I was the size of these kids out here to stop playing and I am still playing professionally, making money and doing what I love to do.
