When it comes to the NBA, 6-4 guards come a dime a dozen and teams can get them anywhere at any time. But Jodie Meeks is having a special year. You have to go back to Dan Issel to find a guy with a higher scoring average and he’s put himself in the same category as guys like Jack Givens, Kevin Grevey and myself.
Can he duplicate that next year? It will be hard to do, especially with the way coach Gillispie says he is going to upgrade the overall talent.
If I am Jodie Meeks and his family, if he is anywhere in the first round, you have to take a serious look at going to the NBA. He’s already been through the injury thing. What if he gets hurt again? Then his stock drops. You have to go while you are hot.
Based on the year he has and the national exposure he has got and the improvements he has made in putting the ball on the floor and creating shots for himself, I think he is a first-round pick. He has always been a rhythm shooter. The only thing you would hope he could improve going to the next level would be his assists to turnover ratio. Sometimes he gets himself in trouble because he doesn’t create for his teammates. But once he gets his assists up to go with his shooting, defense and effort, there’s no weakness in his game. He has a great attitude.
With all he went through last year with his injury, you wish nothing but the best for him. He’s having a special year and if that means this is the best time for him to go to the NBA, then that’s what he needs to do for himself.
