VAUGHT: Guy solid with Kentucky Premium Story

Lexington Catholic standout Winston Guy remains “solid” with Kentucky as national signing day approaches and is glad he’s basically only hearing from the UK coaches now.

“The other schools have basically given up because they know I am solid with UK,” said Guy. “The UK coaches, especially Chuck Smith, stay in touch with me to make sure I get my grades up so I can get there as soon as school is over here.”

Guy, a safety with speed and big-time hitting ability, is working to improve his grade-point average and also raise his ACT score.

“It is just little things like staying focused in class more so I can improve my test score,” Guy said. “Coach Smith wants me to take the ACT as much as possible.

“Football-wise, I am really prepared, I have been working out on my own. I lift for 30 minutes and then go run track. I want to stay in the best shape that I can.”

With Guy’s speed and big-play potential, there has been some speculation that UK might try him at receiver rather than safety where it has more experience returning.

“Joker (Phillips) has said maybe he would try me on offense, but he jokes around a lot and you can’t tell when he’s serious. It really doesn’t matter to me as long as I can find a way to help the team,” Guy, who originally committed to Arkansas before switching to UK, said.

Guy helped Lexington Catholic win the Class AAAA state championship. However, he was mildly disappointed that he didn’t win Mr. Football. Instead, Lone Oak quarterback Corey Robinson, who lost the title game to Catholic, did.

“We had a great season that I am very proud of,” Guy, who set a school record for quarterback sacks, said. “I was kind of upset about it (Mr. Football). My dad was upset. But I am happy for Corey.

“I felt that I did everything I could to help our team win state. I did a lot of stuff to contribute to our team. I guess it is acceptable that he won because he broke some national records and you have to give him credit for that. This year my main drive was to win state and make first-team all-state. And I do have that state ring.”

Guy talks often when UK commits E.J. Fields of Frankfort and Randall Cobb of Knoxville. He also tries to do what he can to help persuade Lexington Henry Clay standout receiver Aaron Boyd to pick UK over the many national offers he’s weighing.

“Aaron is being recruited by a lot of people, but I am trying to keep him in the state. I would love to play with him. I will wish him the best no matter where he goes, but I hope he comes to UK.”
