(Mostly) Unsung Heroes of the Game
Lones Seiber. Coming into the game Seiber was 7-9 in field goals. Leaving the game he is 10-12, with his 3-3 performance coming in the critical 4th quarter and overtime. Of course, he nailed the clutch 43-yard field goal in overtime, splitting the uprights, to tie the game. Miss that, and we're lamenting "what might have been." After last year's freshman year in which many were ready to write him off, he has fully redeemed himself and seems to have cured all of his ills. He certainly came up big today.
Derrick Locke. My goodness, this track-star-who-really-is-a-football player has speed. We knew that. But, no offense to Timex, did we know that he could take a licking and keep on ticking? Locke managed to hit the hole time and time again, and at times absorb huge hits from the stellar LSU defensive line. Locke also scored the first touchdown in overtime, a critical play in which he just got in up the middle. Locke began today as UK's 4th string running back, but was pushed into duty when Rafael Little was out with injury, and Alphonso Smith still recovering. When Tony Dixon fumbled, it was Locke time. His 20 carries for 64 yards may not be statistically stellar, but they were a real key to the game. He alone gained more rushing yards than LSU was allowing full teams per game for the season.
Jason Leger. Leger isn't the biggest UK lineman, but he may be the best. Leger did not start the game due to injury, but wanted to play, was inserted into the game, and despite continuing to aggravate his injury, his play was too good to be removed. With LSU leading 27-14, Leger was part of the group that led Kentucky to 13 points late in the 3rd quarter and 4th quarter, where Kentucky averaged 5.9 yards per play. Kentucky's pass protection was stellar as well, with LSU unable to lodge even one sack of quarterback Andre Woodson. Leger may not play in next week's big CBS game against Florida, but for this afternoon, the fifth-year senior made sure they won the first big CBS game against LSU.
