Matthew Smith Profile
Louisville (Ky.) St. Xavier standout Matthew Smith has committed to the University of Kentucky over Louisville, Ohio, Boston College and Auburn.
"I've always been a Kentucky fan," Smith said. "I've always wanted to go to school there since I was kid. My family wants me to go to school there too."
"I went to all of there games this past year and I have a great relationship with the coaching staff," Smith said. "It was a dream come true to get the offer."
The Wildcats were among the first scholarship offers for the in-state product after the 6-foot-4, 275 pounder performed well at its recent summer camp at the offensive line position.
"They told me that they really see me making a move to the offensive line at the next level," Smith said. "That with my athleticism, I could be a really good player."
"They said I can try out at defensive line, but that my future is probably at offensve line," Smith said. "They like the way I move and that I can really get around and I'd be great on the other side of the ball. I haven't played there for five years."
Smith is the second St. Xavier product the Kentucky staff has taken in the past three years. Sophomore-to-be Justin Jeffries committed two years ago and immediately made the transition from defensive line to offensive line, garnering SEC All-Freshmen team honors in his first year at the position.
"I don't know (Justin) real well," Smith said. "We went against each in practice, alot. But he's obviously someone I'm familiar with and having played with, gives me a common ground."
