A light practice on Thursday

Posted Aug 22, 2002

First, I would like to apologize for the lack of coverage over the last couple of days. The powers that be like to keep me busy, and making it over to Nutter Training Facility was just a bit too much to ask.

Great News! Today, the UK Wildcats fielded the most since probably the first day of practice.

Bad News! Two of the guys who were sitting out were the slated starting corners before fall ball began.

Derrick Tatum, as I was told, tried things out yesterday. Unfortunately he experienced a little more pain than he could normally tolerate, and again he was left on the sidelines again today.

As for Taco Burress, I am not quite sure why he had to sit out the afternoon practice today. He had a muscle pull as of last week, but does a muscle pull keep a player out of practice for more than a couple of days? I am not sure.

Other than that, the overall attitude seemed to be a bit on the flat side today. It seemed as if most of the guys were simply running through the motions. Now, I do not believe that this is a bad thing; they are just becoming more comfortable with what they are trying to do.

There is a bad side though. With the knowledge that teams such as Louisville are going all out, and have for a good 4 scrimmages of 120+ plays, maybe some of the kids are itching to hit? Who knows?

Enough of the speculation, there were a few very interesting notes of worthy. First of all, Glenn Holt continues to impress, with some of the most athletic catches I have ever seen anyone in a Kentucky uniform bring in.

Also, Tayo Agboke is really becoming a leader on the field. If he can somehow back up his leadership with solid play, then he may be able to fill the shoes of a Wiggins.

Monquantae Gibson, who probably has been the best player on his football team his entire life, is dealing with some difficulty of being the 4th man on the depth chart. With a couple of uninspired reps through drills, Coach Carr completely lit into the young man, making sure his head was still where it needed to be.

Right now, Arliss is just a step ahead of Gibson, only because Arliss has absolutely perfect fundamentals. He does all the little things right, and then backs that up with great athleticism. Monquantae will be an absolutely great running back if he keeps his head in the game, which I am sure he will. It’s tough to adjust to the fact that you aren't "the man" anymore.

Last I saw, Deion Holts (the redshirt freshman walk-on) was in crutches. Today, he was out on the field playing as if he had never been hurt.

Antonio Hall also sat out today due to some undisclosed illness. He probably has run into a spot of the cold, something I have been fighting myself and has absolutely shut me down a couple of times.

Tomorrow I will be talking to a couple of players, seeing how they feel about how practice is going. It should be interesting to hear their perspective on the Mumme like regimen.
