Possibly a ripple effect from the announcement that UK junior second baseman John Shelby had indeed signed with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, the University of Kentucky baseball program announced the signing of talented infielder, Neiko Johnson from one of the nation's most prominant high school baseball programs.

LEXINGTON -- The Kentucky baseball team added another talented player to its already stellar recruiting class this week as Neiko Johnson signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Wildcats.

Johnson is a product of Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., one of the top high school programs in the state. He led Redan to back-to-back 7-AAAAA Region 2 championships as a junior and senior while being named All-County.

As a senior, Johnson batted .433 with six home runs and 24 RBIs. A dangerous leadoff hitter, he swiped 20 bases en route to scoring an astounding 46 runs.

His junior season, Johnson hit .417 with five homers and eight doubles. He also stole eight bags and was named team co-MVP with PJ Phillips, a second-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

"We are very excited to add Neiko Johnson to an already outstanding recruiting class," Kentucky coach John Cohen said. "Neiko is a very athletic, slick-fielding infielder who should have an opportunity to compete for at-bats early in his career. Redan HS has quite a track record of producing talented middle infielders (BJ Phillips, PJ Phillips, and Chris Nelson), and we expect big things out of Neiko at Kentucky."

Johnson joins a stellar recruiting class already coming in to UK that includes the Kentucky State Player of the Year (Clint Tilford) and the Ohio State Player of the Year (Chris Walden).
