TIREY: Kemp is visiting UK this weekend
Something must be in the water in Tennessee. Top basketball recruits seem to be growing on trees in the Volunteer State for this next basketball recruiting class. Two high profile young men, who are indeed close friends, are visiting the Kentucky campus from our south neighbor this weekend. Thaddeus Young, a 6'8" Mr. Everything forward from Memphis, and Willie Kemp, a 6'2" point guard from Bolivar, Tennessee, are taking in the UK-Florida football game and gauging their interest in the UK basketball program. KSR caught up with Kemp for a little Q&A about what he expects. Q: Do you like the recruiting process? Willie Kemp: Well, it's going all right. It hasn't been too bad. Sometimes, it can get a little frustrating, but mostly it's going good. Q: What's your favorite part of the recruiting process? WK: Just going to the schools and being around the coaches and stuff like that. I like being around the players. I like seeing the different schools, and being around their programs. It's nice to be wanted. Q: What are the schools on your list? Where have you visited? WK: I have already been to Tennessee, Memphis, and Arkansas. With Kentucky, I have it down to those four schools. Kentucky is my last visit. Q: What are you going to be interested in seeing when you visit Kentucky? WK: I'll be interested in seeing the academic program. I know they have a good academic program. I want to spend some time with Coach Smith. I just want to talk with him about the program. I want to talk with the players and see what they feel about the program, and how they feel about the coaches. I want to know if the coaches are going to be honest with me. I want to know if they're going to tell me everything. I want to know if the players think I will be successful if I come to their program. Q: What did you know about the UK basketball program when you started your recruiting? WK: I liked what I saw when watching the Kentucky team on television. I know that they are a winning program. They won a lot of SEC championships and have been in a lot of final fours. They always have good players. Q: When will you make your final decision? WK: I'm going to make an early decision. When I get back from Kentucky, I'll probably take like a week or so, and then I will know where I'm going to go to school. Q: What impressed you about the other schools on your list? WK: I'll be comparing the atmosphere and the people surrounding the program. All those places had great people, great fans and coaches. That will be a big part. I have to feel comfortable around the coaches. Q: How much will the players you're playing behind and with affect your decision? WK: I pay attention to it, but it's not a major factor. If I were to go to a program like Kentucky, where they have a player like Rajon Rondo, it would be an honor for me to play behind him or with him. I know he could teach me a lot of things with me being a freshman. But I am looking for a school where I can come in and get a chance to play.
