Kentucky freshman forward Julius Randle was added to the Naismith Trophy midseason watch list on Thursday as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
It marks the third major watch list for Randle, who has also been tabbed as a candidate for the Wooden Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Randle is currently leading the Wildcats at 15.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. The Dallas, Texas, native owns the biggest scoring output for the Wildcats this season (29 versus Belmont) and the five biggest rebounding games, including 16 against UNC Asheville. He has recorded 12 double-doubles.
Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, the award is given annually to the top men’s and women’s player in college basketball. It was first awarded to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor in 1969. Kentucky’s Anthony Davis claimed the honor in 2012.
Randle and the No. 14 Wildcats (19-5, 9-2 SEC) play host to No. 3 Florida on Saturday at Rupp Arena.
