ATHENS - Freshman Josh Harvey-Clemons from Valdosta could make an immediate impact at Georgia, but…
Clemons out for season with Achilles injury
The school announced Monday that an Achilles tendon injury will require surgery that will likely cost sophomore running back Josh Clemons his season.
It's another tough blow for Clemons, who missed the 2012 season recovering from a season-ending knee injury that he suffered in a game against South Carolina as a freshman in 2011.
The 5-foot-10, 212-pound Clemons was a major bright spot for the UK offense this spring. He rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries in the Blue-White Spring Game.
"We are extremely disappointed for Josh because he has worked so hard and come so far," Coach Mark Stoops said via a statement released by UK. "He ran well during the spring and was eager to contribute this season. We are hopeful for a full recovery and look forward to his return to the field."
Clemons, who came to Kentucky from Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga., was rated the No. 31 running back prospect in the Class of 2011 by Scout. He was the Peach State's Class 4A Player of the Year in voting by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
His injury, combined with the recent dismissal of Khalid Thomas for a violation of team rules and the transfer of Justin Taylor, leaves the running back depth chart significantly thinner than it was coming out of spring.
The Wildcats still have experience in seniors Raymond Sanders and Jonathan George, as well as sophomore Dyshawn Mobley, but may have to call upon incoming freshman JoJo Kemp to play more snaps than originally anticipated.
Another freshman, Ryan Timmons, could split some time between wide receiver and running back as he did during his standout career at Franklin County High School.
