Kentucky's athletic department posted a record 3.14 GPA in the spring semester, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart announced Tuesday, led by John Calipari's basketball program.

Despite a disappointing finish on the court this season, the Wildcats remained focused in the classroom en route to a 3.4 team GPA. Twelve of 13 players posted a 3.0 or better with two achieving a 4.0 standing.

"I'm proud of the hard work our guys have put in both on and off the court," Calipari said via his personal Twitter account. "When you run a players-first program, it's not just about loving to play basketball; it's about teaching our kids the love of learning."

Calipari has taken criticism from some in recent years for embracing the "one-and-done" player, but he says the record shows UK is doing its job to help players develop on and off the court.

"When you come to Kentucky, you are either going pro or getting a degree," Calipari said. "We call it the success rate, and right now we're batting 100 percent."

Barnhart set a challenging goal for all competing scholarship student-athletes in 2012-13.

"When I established the goal of a 3.0 overall GPA for our department, I knew I was setting the bar high," Barnhart said via UK Media Relations. "To reach it for an entire athletic year for the first time is an accomplishment our student-athletes should be very proud of. I commend and thank them for their hard work."

Sixteen of the 20 competing sports posted a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the spring semester.
