Waiting Game

Waiting Game

Georgia Williams out of Miami, Fla., has been relatively quiet on the recruiting front. He's focusing on completing his senior season before diving into the recruiting scene. Still, that hasn't stopped several colleges from pursuing the three-star prospect.

"It's been an up-and-down season for us," Williams said of his senior season. "We beat Belen Jesuit 31-21 last Friday though. I made a catch under a minute to go to keep the drive going and we ended up scoring with around 30 seconds left. They came back down the field and were in position to score on us but I stripped the ball from their quarterback and one of my guys picked it up for a touchdown. It was an exciting game for us. We got off to a good start in District 13-8A play."

The 5' 11", 225-pound athlete has been making plays on both sides of the ball this fall.

"I don't know what my stats are but I know if we win Thursday we make the playoffs. I don't keep up with all of the individual stuff. My coach does all that. I feel like my leadership skills have gotten better, and our whole team is working together more. I feel like I'm more coachable now."

What on-the-field improvements has George made?

"I'm mixing in my blitzes well, and I'm also catching the ball better on offense. I'm making a lot of big time plays."

Which position does Williams believe is his best, receiver or linebacker?

"I feel like I play equally well on offense and defense, really."

What does the 2011 All-Dade selection do best on defense and offense?

"I hit people on defense and get them down to the ground. I make a lot of tackles. On offense I can do well after I catch the ball. I can make you miss or run through you. I play real physical on both sides of the ball."

What is he mostly being recruited for?

"Really as an athlete. I've been offered at a few schools at receiver and a few at linebacker."

Who has offered at receiver?

"That stuff is in the locker room."

Linebacker?

"Ole Miss and Georgia. I really don't know."

Which colleges are staying in phone contact right now?

"I'm taking the SAT test in December, and I'll start taking my visits after that. I'm getting calls from different coaches. Grambling calls randomly. Ole Miss calls and texts after my games. Purdue, Clemson, Colorado, and Kansas stay in touch. I just look at the area code and the ones I don't know I usually don't answer. If I see 786 or 662 I'll usually answer, but I just don't answer many calls. Kentucky offered me recently too. LSU stays in touch."

Which schools are standing out right now?

"Pretty much I'm open to everybody. I don't have a favorite. I listen to any coach who calls. I'm pretty much open to everyone. I just have an open mind. It's not like I'm leaning anywhere. I'm going to revisit the recruiting stuff after my season. I'm trying to take us as far as I can and then make my SAT score. It just isn't time for me to focus on that yet. Coach Mark Burnam tells me who to call back. He's going to be right there for me. All of the coaches get my number from him and then they call me. He will lead me straight.
