Kentucky is in the mix for one of the Lone Star State's top-rated running backs as he prepares to…
Wortham feels at home on UK official visit
The three-star Hebron (Texas) High school running back was in Lexington to get his first up-close look at the Wildcats and the UK campus.
"It went great," Wortham said. "The main thing that stood out was the people. I loved the people, loved the coaches, and I got along really well with the players. They were so welcoming and made me feel really comfortable, like I was home.
"I also liked the campus a lot. It's a really nice place. Overall, I feel like it's a place where I could really fit in."
Wortham (5-11, 200, 4.48) said he didn't go into the visit expecting to give a verbal commitment, even if he liked the experience as much as he did. "But at least now I have something to compare other schools to, and it's a very strong impression. I'm definitely going to keep talking to Kentucky."
He also holds offers from programs like Colorado State, UConn, Houston, Wake Forest, Navy, Nevada, San Diego State, Utah State, New Mexico and Texas State.
"I don't have any other visits scheduled yet," Wortham said. "I'm still unsure about those."
Asked about some of the other highlights of his UK visit, Wortham said: "I had a nice dinner with the players. (Sophomore safety Glenn Faulkner served as his host for the visit.) That's when I got to meet a bunch of them and ask some questions about what the program is like from their perspective. I had a nice one-on-one discussion with coach (Joker) Phillips. I really enjoyed that because he spent a lot of time getting to know me better as a person, not just a player. He asked about my family, stuff like that. You can tell he really cares about his players."
He knows the Wildcats are struggling this season, but that hasn't affected his outlook on UK or his recruitment.
"They have a lot of young talent being asked to play without much experience or preparation in a really strong conference,"Wortham said. "That's hard to do right now, but I think they've got a lot of potential in the future. I think I could come in and help them get where they want to go. It's a really good system for a player like me who can do a lot of different things out of the backfield."
Wortham rushed for more than1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. He's approaching 800 yards midway through his senior season in the ever-competitive Texas football landscape.
