Washington to Kentucky?

Pat Washington is the apparent successor of Tee Martin on the Kentucky football staff

Football Scoop reported yesterday that Pat Washington will be named to replace Tee Martin on the Kentucky football staff.

Washington, who like Martin hails from Mobile, Alabama. Like Martin, Washington spent his playing career as a quarterback and was a two-year starter at Auburn.

When the Courier-Journal contacted East Carolina regarding Washington they were informed that Washington has resigned from the school's football staff. The resignation will be effective on Monday February 20th.

When the Courier-Journal spoke to Washington via telephone he did not acknowledge being hired.

Washington told the Courier-Journal, "I am being considered. It's a process. We'll see what happens."

Kentucky officials declined to comment. State law prevents officially filling the position until the position has been posted for seven days.

Washington will arrive in Lexington with a wealth of SEC experience coaching wide receivers.

Washington began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two seasons with Auburn.

Washington also coached Wide Receivers at Mississippi State. He spent one season at MSU coaching wide receivers.

He was the Tennessee wide receivers coach for 11 seasons (1995-2005). During that time he worked with current Kentucky Offensive Coordinator Randy Sanders. The duo was instrumental in the potent offense that won the 1998 BCS Championship with Martin at quarterback.

Washington told the Courier-Journal a reunion with Sanders "would be good," but did not comment further.

Washington arrived at East Carolina from Southern Mississippi, where he spent three seasons on the football staff, on January 6th of this year. His coaching of the running backs was a key element in Southern Miss winning the Conference USA title in 2011.

He chose East Carolina over a job offer from North Carolina.
